Company

We started emporos because we had each watched the same thing happen from different seats: an AI programme that worked in the demo and died in deployment.

Why we exist

One of us ran technology and data for a bank and sat on the committees that decide what gets built. One of us led strategy, transformation and data science inside an insurer, sat between the business, the engineers and the budget, and built the systems himself. One of us kept production data systems running inside investment firms, where a pipeline that fails at 2 a.m. is a business problem, not an engineering one.

Those are the three layers where enterprise AI succeeds or fails: how the institution decides, how AI creates value inside it, and how the software keeps working. We built the company around all three.

What we have led

Our founders come from careers spent inside the institutions we now serve.

Between them they have led and delivered engagements including:

  • Core banking replacement, and the establishment of a new overseas bank
  • Digital banking, payments and cash-management platforms
  • Cloud and data-platform migration for a bank
  • AI and data strategy, and an AI centre of excellence
  • Robotic process automation and compliance-screening programmes across banking, energy and manufacturing
  • Production machine learning for fraud in motor claims
  • Speech-to-text and LLM pipelines for regulatory compliance review
  • IFRS 17 delivery across finance, actuarial, IT and vendors
  • IT portfolio prioritisation and programme-office design
  • M&A and market-entry due diligence in Southeast Asia
  • Market-data pipelines and data-reconciliation platforms inside investment firms
  • Robotics and automation in aerospace manufacturing

How institutions decide

Thana (Jay) Groot

Co-Founder & Chief Executive Officer

Thana (Jay) Groot has spent more than twenty-five years inside the institutions we now serve. He was Senior Executive Vice President and Head of Technology and Data at CIMB Thai, running the bank’s technology end to end: digital and mobile, core banking, cloud, cyber security, data governance and an AI centre of excellence, together with the budget, the vendors and the committees that come with them. Before that he was a Managing Director at Accenture, leading financial-services and banking transformation in Singapore and Thailand, and an Executive Vice President at NTT DATA for Asia Pacific, where he headed digital transformation, technology consulting and the regional financial-services business.

Across those roles, and earlier ones at KPMG Consulting and Deloitte in Japan and at Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ in Singapore, he led the programmes banks find hardest: core banking replacement, payments and cash-management platforms, credit and lending journeys, finance and data architecture, robotic process automation, and the change programmes that make them stick. At Deloitte he helped build a new overseas bank from nothing, from the data centre and the settlement links to the regulatory reporting.

He has chaired or sat on IT strategy, IT security, digital banking, risk management and data governance committees, holds the Director Certification and Advanced Audit Committee programmes of the Thai Institute of Directors and the Project Management Professional certification, and has spoken at regional CIO and digital-transformation summits. He has lived and worked in Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong and the UK, and works in English, Japanese and Thai.

How the work gets redesigned and delivered

Pooong (New) Marks

Co-Founder & Chief Product and Delivery Officer

Pooong (New) Marks was First Senior Vice President and Head of Transformation at Muang Thai Insurance, one of Thailand’s largest non-life insurers, where he led the Strategy and Transformation Group: the business analysis, data science, programme-office and organisational-development teams that sit between the business units, the engineers and the budget. He sat on the insurer’s claims, reinsurance, product, model-governance, IT and IFRS 17 committees, and earlier held the IT strategy and governance roles that established its IT programme office. He began in the CEO office, rotating through business intelligence, corporate project management and investment.

He also built things himself: a production speech-to-text and LLM pipeline for regulatory compliance review, with the model routing, GPU inference and unit economics behind it; the insurer’s first production machine-learning model, for fraud in motor claims, deployed on Kubernetes with a full MLOps pipeline; an AI chatbot delivered with a bank’s technology arm; e-KYC; and the delivery of the IFRS 17 programme across finance, actuarial, IT and vendors. He has also led M&A and market-entry due diligence in Southeast Asia, and spent a summer building machine-learning trading strategies at a London hedge fund.

He sits on the board of Backyard Company Limited, a technology start-up, and serves as a UN Road Safety Advisor, liaison to the UN Group of Friends for Road Safety. He holds an MSc in Analytics and Management from London Business School, completed on a full scholarship, and a BBA from Chulalongkorn University.

How the software keeps working

Chaiyo (Win) Hoohew

Co-Founder & Chief Technology Officer

Chaiyo (Win) Hoohew has spent his career keeping production data systems running inside London investment firms, where a pipeline that fails overnight is a business problem before it is an engineering one. He was a Market Data Engineer at Capula Investment Management and a Software Engineer at Marshall Wace Asset Management, and in between built product at Seal, an automation and digitisation start-up.

Inside those firms he owned the reliability, throughput and cost of market-data processes; built data onboarding, reconciliation, alerting and monitoring with Python, C#, Airflow, Kafka and Kubernetes; and worked with analysts and data vendors so that the numbers could be trusted. Before finance, he was a Robotics and Automation Engineer at Rolls-Royce, where he programmed robot arms to measure jet-engine components, introduced virtual reality into the engineering process, and delivered robotics programming workshops for engineers and technicians.

He holds an MSc in Computing Science from Imperial College London and a first-class MEng in Aerospace Engineering from Downing College, Cambridge, where he was a Downing College Scholar. He has mentored graduate engineers throughout his career.

Principles

Five things we won't trade away.

  1. 01

    Start from the workflow

We don't sell a platform looking for a use. We find the work that costs the most and redesign it.

  2. 02

    Measure before we ship

No system goes to production without an evaluation harness and a number the business owner has agreed to.

  3. 03

    Build it to be owned

Your team runs what we build. Our job is to make ourselves unnecessary for that system, then move to the next one.

  4. 04

    Build it twice

Every engagement leaves reusable software behind. That's how the second use case costs less than the first.

  5. 05

    Say no early

If a workflow isn't worth automating, or the models aren't ready, we say so in week three, not month nine.

Bring us the workflow that costs you the most.

Tell us what it is, who does it today, and roughly how many hours it takes. We'll come back within a week with a view on whether AI changes it, and how we'd prove it.
